OT30 Trackers

The event you are about to take part in is using these trackers from Open Tracking.  These small trackers about the size of a key fob, weigh just 39g and are perfect for sub 12hr events.  The way we have set these devices up means they can be popped in to a pocket or in the outside pocket of a rucksac, unlike the longer events we track, where we need to tape them to your shoulder strap.

Registration

The tracker will be issued to you at registration, either they will be pre-allocated (bib #1 = tracker #1) or we will dynamically allocate by scanning a barcode on the bib number and then the tracker number (so please don’t pack your bib number away when you get it).  We are normally trying to allocate a lot of trackers in a short period of time, so please move on once you get handed your tracker.

Carrying the tracker

If you are wearing a race vest, many have small pockets on the shoulders or on the front of the strap where you can pop the tracker in.  If you have a big mesh pocket on the outside you can put it in that.  There are couple of instances where we have problems

  1. Deep pockets on the shoulder strap where the tracker falls behind a soft flask – in effect the tracker is surrounded by water.
  2. Under armpit big pockets – often used for food.  Some food wrappers are foil backed, when they cover the tracker it doesn’t work.
  3. Foil bags / blankets – often put in top pockets of rucksacs.  When the tracker is buried under these they don’t work.

Remember stuff moves so whilst you might have put it in a pocket with nothing covering it, in the rush of a race and you need to get something out or move things around the tracker ends up getting covered.

Open Tracking Clip

We have developed a small clip that you can use on the event.  They will be freely available for your use, but you will need to put the tracker in the clip yourself and attach it to your bag.  The clip is designed to attach to race belts, straps on bags, it also has a hole so you can use a key clip in a bag if you are worried about the tracker falling out.

When you finish the event, it would be appreciated if you took the tracker out of the clip and put the clip in the bucket provided.

Your own Tracker Clip

In the coming months we will be releasing the 3D file for those who wish make their own tracker clip on home 3D printers.

We recognise that there are scenarios that we can’t foresee with our clip or that people want to thread the clip on to a part of their pack which could be time consuming.  For those who have the skills and the tools, we are releasing the 3D files for people to print their own clips.  Few points.
